Alamo Kiwanis Club is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year and from its beginning, has been a club with an attitude, and the attitude of our Club has been to do good works for the children and the San Antonio community and to have a good time doing it. That we have been successful in our charitable endeavors is evidenced by the thousands of dollars contributed each year to local children’s charities and the hundreds of man-hours contributed to civic and charitable endeavors by Alamo Kiwanians. That the participation in Club activities has been rewarding to the individual members is evidenced by the Club’s continuing growth in membership and by the Club’s membership retention, boasting members with 30, 40, and even 50 years perfect attendance at its weekly meetings.

The oldest fundraising project of the Club is a summer-long musical production staged under the stars at the Arneson River Theater in La Villita. Professional dancers and singers provide the entertainment. Club members manage and man the marketing, finance, logistics and other aspects of the production. Our audiences have been unreserved in their praise of the shows. “Fiesta Noche del Rio” is recognized as the longest regularly-playing outdoor musical production in the US, having been produced every year since its inception in 1958.

The Western Art Show and Preview Party, staged each year at the time of the San Antonio Livestock Show and Rodeo at the Texas Ranger and Pioneer Memorial Hall Museum is another long-running success story. It is typically attended by more than 800 guests and has become one of the premier social events of the season. Over five hundred paintings and sculptures, both wood and bronze, are on exhibit and offered for sale, and catered refreshments and live entertainment are provided for the guests.

Alamo Kiwanis members have the opportunity to participate in projects and activities of particular interest to them individually, and to enjoy the fellowship and the satisfaction of working with active, dedicated fellow Kiwanians for the good of the needy children of San Antonio
